Use light matte color as a transition shade using Tapered Blending Brush and apply in between crease and brow bone for a gradient look.

Apply a shimmer (or matte) shade on eyelid from inner corner to outer corner using Large Shader Brush or Small Shader Brush

Apply a darker shade in the crease and outer v using Blending Brush or Domed Crease Brush to add depth.

Use a clean Tapered Blending Brush in circular motions to blend eyeshadows for a seamless look.

Without a proper base, your eye shadow look, no matter how beautifully applied, will be fleeting. Make-up artists stress the importance of doing prep work before opening your palette, specifically using a primer to make your eye shadow last. Apply a thin layer of primer with your ring finger, a Q-tip, or a small flat brush. If you want to effectively prevent colour from travelling to places it shouldn't, apply it all the way up to your brow bone and even beneath the lower lash line. In general, silicone-based primers will work well with most eyeshadows and skin types, but if you're working with a powdery eyeshadow, look for more liquid formulations.

We have a simple method for turning pared-down, everyday eyeshadow looks into the life of the party. Fortunately, our expert is here to share her step by step guide to a smoky eye that’s simple, elegant and impactful.

Whilst the traditional smoky eye is black and grey, Expert notes that other colours can work just as well, especially if you don’t feel ready to dive headfirst into bold, rock ‘n’ roll territory. “A smoky eye with neutral shades can work just as well greys, browns and blacks,” she says. “A smoky eye with taupe shades is a great way to soften the look for any age. Use a creamy crayon eyeshadow, like the expert goes for a light or dark smoky eye and blend with your ring finger.”

If there’s one thing to remember, it’s to apply your shadows gradually, and not to avoid layering colour. Doing this will minimize patchiness, harshness and shadow fallout on your cheeks. The same basic rules of application apply, with lighter colours towards the inner corners of your eyes, and darker shades blended out at the edges out and towards the brow bone.

Consider the lightest shades to be mini spotlights for your makeup look's grand stage. Light shades should be applied to your brow bone and inner corner of your eyes in the same way that our favourite highlighters are applied to the tops of your features. These are the areas that will reflect the most light, making your eyes appear brighter and adding depth and interesting contrast to the darker shades that follow.

Medium shades are your eyeshadow palette's key players. Depending on how dramatic you want to be, they can be used to build and create any makeup look. A natural makeup look entails using medium colour shades that are the same colour as, or slightly darker than, your skin tone and applying them evenly across your entire lid. Apply the darker medium shades in the creases of your eyes with a smaller, tapered eyeshadow brush to add dimension.
